Having Fun While Making Do!

I recently finished reading a thoroughly researched, interesting, and expectedly disheartening documentary about the Donner Party. I was struck by many things while reading, not the least of which was how deeply grateful I am for the health and well-being of my beloved family. As Thanksgiving approaches, I know lots of folks have gratitude on the mind. Me too. I think a large part of gratitude is being content with what we have. I tell my kids
"you get what you get and you're grateful for it,"
which is a slightly elevated spiritual version of the more behaviorally-motivated "you get what you get and you don't throw a fit". Though to be honest, I'd settle for the lesser law most days and consider it a win! But I digress. My point is, I think if we are grateful for what we HAVE rather than dwelling on what we are lacking, we can truly be happy.

A recent experience newly validated this idea for me.
We went out to visit Eric's family last week. Took a jaunt out to the family cabin...and woke to more weather than we were anticipating!
The view off the deck in the morning.
These big, huge, powdery flakes came down all morning and into the afternoon.
A very small percentage never made it to the ground, finding a melting point on warm skin and hair and--- very occasionally--- inside a gaping mouth.
The girls' warmest clothing was their footie pjs.
PJ exploration during the snow.
After dinner, Eric went out with Papa to see about filling our freezer with elk steaks. Unbelievably, they spotted a herd just a hillside away from the cabin. Eric says it was the longest shot he's ever made--- we heard it while getting dessert for the kids! The early sighting and close proximity to the cabin meant the boys could get home to the comfort of the cabin relatively early. They couldn't haul all the meat in one trip, though, so they hung what they couldn't carry in a tree and informed all of us their plan to retrieve it in the morning.
No snow pants. No snow shoes. No water-proof gloves. Gwen didn't even have a hat (she borrowed mine). But we were all eager to make do with what we had and hike out with the boys in the morning to witness their creative attempt at floating the elk meat across the river rather than hauling it around the long way.
We rode part of the way in the Rhino.
Emmett got passed around a bit.

Then we hiked.

The girls thought they needed to poke their walking poles into every ice-crusted puddle.

Caroline's garbage bag gaiters billowed out around her when she sat down to make some snowballs.

This should have been a video! Eric high-stepped it across the icy cold river like a 'zephyr set free' (name that movie?), motivated by the fact that his pants were not INTENDED to be waterproof or warm when submerged in a mountain stream.
Repeat the action, with a little less agility, dragging a heavy elk quarter (sort of floating).

We laughed safely from the bank and had a great time watching the men struggle--- perhaps because we were glad it was them, not us?
Emmett wouldn't keep his too-large mittens on. But he seemed happy to be outside as long as no one set him down in the cold stuff. :)
 Heading back.

My awesome attire: trashbag gaiters, sweatshirt with no coat, and my infinity scarf serving as my hat since Gwen was wearing the real one. blue Babushka meets trash space ranger!
Of course, reading about the Donner party gave me some pretty good perspective. Hard to complain when I had clothes, shoes, a warm cabin to head back to, and plenty of nutritious food to eat. Isn't it amazing how much we take for granted?
It was a lovely jaunt with beauty all around us.
  Everyone had a great time!
There was also a makeshift sledding excursion.
 Daddy Manpower was required.
Then we switched to Rhino power!
Caroline was absolutely thrilled!... and then equally devastated when the cable tore through the plastic sled and the fun slid to a halt.
 Snow angels instead?
Of course, Gramma was prepared with some fun indoor activities when the girls wanted to thaw out and let their wet mittens dry by the fire.

All in all, I'd say the few days we enjoyed up at the snowy cabin were unhampered by our lack of fancy gear or even simple gear (like a hat). In fact, I think perhaps the absence of stuff got us to be creative, think outside the box, and create really awesome memories along the way (who could forget the trash bag gaiters?!?)! Just reaffirms for me:

You can have a GREAT time while "making do"!

Big Surprise-- check out this video!

Thankful. and this is not just a Thanksgiving post.

But I guess it is that too.
notice the lil Gwen hand in the bottom right corner... stealing a roll! What a character!

Gwen has been struggling with praying lately. So after much thought and prayers of my own, this is what I've come up with. Our fridge is covered with images of things she loves or that we do regularly. Every day before bed, we select applicable pictures and carry them upstairs on her prayer cookie sheet so she can be specific about thanking Heavenly Father for daily blessings. It has helped immensely to make prayers more meaningful, more from her (rather than us just telling her what to say), and I think it helps her to be grateful. I'm grateful for the Spirit's guidance.
What I'm really grateful for, though, was a couple of nights ago, just before bedtime. I was doing dishes and prepping the kitchen for nighttime, when I heard delightful laughing coming from BOTH my girls at the same time. By the time I got my camera out, the laughing had pretty much stopped, but there are still happy noises. I am delighted that they love each other so much. My heart took a picture and I just felt so content and happy. Truly this was a moment that makes motherhood worth it.
oh, and guess what? these 4 crawling steps are Caroline's VERY FIRST crawls! How random and wonderful is it that I was lucky enough to be filming? She is still mostly army crawling, but for Gwen, she pulls out the big guns! :)

100 things to be grateful for: #51-60

51. ward breakfast
52. playing at the park with friends
53. when other people hold Caroline so I can eat, take care of Gwen, or whatever
54. inspiring gals like my friend C, who ran a 5k this morning in her 3rd trimester of pregnancy and then showed up for the breakfast (rather than going home to a soothing bubble bath or massage)
55. Asian Festival! totally free parking and entrance and performances!
56. a healthy walk to and from the event
57. when a Korean lady offered me a job as a youth pastor teaching Sunday School at her Korean church
58. Gwen LOVIN the lil hut with the tea set and wooden sushi roll that you could 'cut'
59. amazing weather for the event! sunny, but not excruciatingly hot
60. Emi chasing Gwen down for me again and again since I was wearing Caroline.

100 things to be grateful for: #41-50

41. trains. Gwen loves them and that makes me love them!
42. chocolate covered strawberries (I was good-- I only had 1)
43. fitting into jeans without the aid of a rubberband (granted they are not my pre-prego jeans, but I'll celebrate my wins)
44. Fridays
45. library free movie 'rentals'. Looking forward to the original Tron tonight! Gotta see it before we indulge in the new one...
46. Microsoft Excel: how else could I create a handy and tidy spreadsheet to track our competition in like 10 minutes?
47. a much anticipated full diaper from Caroline (I know you're wondering 'how is a huge poop something to be grateful for?' well, folks, she has been savin this one. I am glad she is finally comfortable!)
48. bonus: though she completely blew out of her clothes, the carseat miraculously is unaffected!
49. Logan. Gwen's friend came over to play today. He calls her "Dwen", and they totally boss each other around but don't seem to be bothered by it. I am amazed at the physical things she will try because she is inspired by him.
50. My favorite thing she said today: when Logan handed her her favorite turtle, she said, "Oooh, DANK you my Logan!" and hugged it to her. "MY" Logan?!?! LOL!

100 things to be grateful for: #31-40

31. healthy new niece! born yesterday 8 lb 9 oz, 21 in long She is adorable and I can't wait to meet her!
32. healthy sister. always glad to hear post-delivery recovery is going smoothly.
33. considering her description of this labor and delivery, my gratitude for the quick speed of my own with Caroline is renewed.
34. swings at the park
35. Gwen giggles: purely contagious!
36. inspiration that told me to head to the car NOW... because not 10 seconds after I got the kids loaded in, rain came down in torrential SHEETS
37. Gwen eating all her dinner, including about 15 green beans without a huge fuss! (granted, they were in exchange for about 30 slices of strawberry, but a mom celebrates the wins)
38. girl time
39. Eric putting Gwen to bed at night. She LOVES her special time with him.
40. and guess what? tonight she was actually ASLEEP in her bed when I got home! No toys, blankets still on, she must have actually been tired!

100 things to be grateful for: #21-30

21. Mission calls: my BIL Bryce just got called to Des Moines, Iowa!
22. homemade cookies from my MIL--doesn't get much better than that!
23. winning the mission guessing game. Well, Caroline won, actually, but I never win anything, so vicarious wins are still a big deal!
24. BIL Collin. He had a birthday.
25. homemade bread that actually rises!
26. that said, I am grateful to my MIL for sharing her expertise in a 1-on-1 baking tutelage session in which I gained all the tips and skills that allowed number 25 to happen
27. competition-- it brings out the best in me because I am so naturally competitive and it drives me to accomplish more than I would otherwise. Eric and I are embarking on a friendly competition, inspired by the Biggest Loser, only with a twist since Eric has to gain weight and I have to lose it. Going off of percentages, with weekly points and a grand prize for reaching team and personal goals! I'm stoked to begin! (and I should add that Eric is taking the competition really seriously. He lifted weights last night for 1/2 and hour and got up early this morning to power walk 3 miles before going in to the lab)
28. Gwen's compliments. She praises me for my clothes, my hair, my jewelry, etc. I love to hear her say in her sweet voice, "I like your necklace Mom" or "oh, your hair is so beautiful". Makes my day!
29. FHE. Gwen has been struggling with showing affection to Eric, for who knows what reason. She wouldn't sit on his lap, give him hugs or kisses, and would run the other direction screaming "no-no-no-no" if Eric tried to give her a hug. I felt bad for him. So I planned a lesson about Daddy, focusing it around the Primary song "I'm so Glad when Daddy comes Home"... and it is working! Yesterday she greeted Eric and giggled the whole time while she sang along with me and performed all the actions. What an inspired way for family to grow together and to provide a forum for teaching and learning.
30. To go along with #29, I'm grateful for how music can get Gwen to do just about anything. :)

100 things to be grateful for: #11-20

11. a zoo membership-- having a place to take Gwen is wonderful!
12. Shane Smith-- he is Gwen's best friend, and I gotta tell ya, he is so conscientious of her and tries so hard to make her happy. I LOVE seeing how happy she is to chase him, be chased by him, have him help her up on benches too high for her to get up on her own, or even try to put her shoe back on when he discovered her distress at it falling off her foot. I LOVE that Gwen has such a wonderful friend in her life!
13. leftovers. nuf said.
14. a baby that LOVES to nurse! What a huge blessing that is, in so many ways!
15. Biggest Loser-- I've been watching this season on Hulu when I nurse. Never watched it before now, but I am really motivated by the contestants to make smart choices with my nutrition. I'm proud that today I was strong enough to opt out of fresh bread and blackberry jam and chose raw, plain cauliflower as my snack.
16. baby Caroline grins!!!
17. ATMs that don't require me to get out--let the sleeping children sleep, ya know? :)
18. Eric and Gwen daddy-daughter walks (and my quiet time with Caroline)
19. corn on the cob
20. fresh raspberries

100 things to be grateful for: #1-10

inspired by my good friend, Jordan. 10 'gratefuls' for 10 days, no repeats. my list will not be ranked in order of importance to my life or eternity, just things especially pertinent to the day. Begin:
  1. my sister and her family are safe after a dangerous tornado last night in Arkansas that took 100 lives
  2. ditto to the safety of my parents and brother, also in Arkansas, but not as close to the tornado
  3. when Caroline's naptime and Gwen's quiet time magically coincide!
  4. rain- don't have to water the garden
  5. a lul in the rain for enjoying outside with the kids
  6. 5 transplanted tomato plants from my good friend Emi because she heard all our starts bit the dust
  7. a baby who slept 7 hours straight last night!
  8. a great, uninterrupted scripture study
  9. air conditioning-- because up until a week ago ours was broken and it was sweltering.
  10. my wonderful friends here... contemplating how many have already moved and those who will leave soon, it just makes me realize even more how much I love them and will miss our close proximity.

Allans Visit #3 Appliances Nightmare

Wouldn't you know, when one appliance breaks, they all follow suit. When it rains it pours, I guess.

Our fridge had been on the fritz for a while, leaking and stuff. Maintenance had been out to look at it and said they'd get back to us on what might be the problem. Well, Saturday morning we woke up and opened the door... and discovered the fridge must have finally bit the dust completely because it was no longer cool inside. We emailed maintenance, pulled out an ice chest and some ice, and deposited all extremely perishable items inside, leaving the condiments in the fridge.

No big deal. Under control.

That afternoon, during lunch preparations (remember I was hosting 3 extra adults and of course wanted to put on something delectable and special for the occasion), I began an oven preheat for our Sweet Potato fries. And suddenly, sparks started to shoot out from under the oven door accompanied with fire cracker sound effects. My mom and I were the only ones in the kitchen at the time and we both squealed. Turns out the filament burnt out. Can't use the oven for fries or pineapple. Luckily, our neighbors were kind enough to lend us the use of their oven for the fries and the broiled pineapple. Also, luckily, our stove still worked so we could pan fry our Teriyaki steaks. For a moment there was a scare because the burner wasn't getting warm, but then Eric thought to check the breaker, and sure enough the oven burn out had kicked it off. Reset, no problem. And suddenly we were extremely grateful for the functioning stove. Plan B without an oven would have been to fire up the charcoal grill. So, I began the somewhat ridiculous process of walking between our house and our neighbors to stir, flip, adjust temperatures, rotate, season, etc, etc, with Eric spearheading the cooking at our place.

No big deal. Under control.

During the final 20 minutes of lunch prep, when some things are at the ready to eat stage and we were trying not to let anything burn or get cold while the rest finished up, maintenance showed up at our back door with a temporary replacement fridge to hold us over until Monday when our new one would arrive. So, while trying not to let things burn, shuttling back and forth between our kitchen and the Harris's kitchen to check on the sweet potato fries, trying to make the Pineapple ice cream shakes before the ice cream melted completely, etc... we had to empty the rest of our fridge and freezer, deposit everything on the non-existent counter space, quickly spot-clean the nastiness that was revealed to have been hiding under the fridge, and keep out of the way of the crew moving things around. It was pure craziness.

No big deal. Under control.

Thankfully:
  • when the fridge went out, we hadn't gone grocery shopping yet. If we had, we wouldn't have been able to fit all the perishables in the ice chest.
  • since we were eating in the living room anyway, there was no rush to try to clear EVERYTHING off the table right away. Since it was piled high with all the contents of our broken fridge--and the temp one was significantly smaller--trying to put everything away was kind of time-consuming. We could eat and then get to it.
  • our neighbors let us use their oven. repeatedly. even when they had to run to the store, they trusted me to go on in.
  • we got a temp fridge. and then we got a new fridge!
  • the stove still worked.
  • and perhaps the biggest one of all: Caroline slept til right after all the craziness was over. Can you imagine if I'd had to stop right in the middle to nurse a hungry, crying baby? Oh man, I shiver just to think of it!
Appliance Nightmare? No big deal. Under control. :)

this is a post

well,

this is not a post about feeling inadequate
this is not a post about disillusionment
this is not a post about discouragement
this is not a post about looking at myself with fresh eyes and wondering how exactly I got to this place
this is not a post about wanting to be a better person than I see in the mirror...

this is a post about
empowerment

the 'can-do-motivated-to-change-get-out-of-any-ole-rut' kind of feeling
that I have when I see myself through the eyes of my Heavenly Father and my Savior, Jesus Christ. The Atonement is amazing, don't you think?
The power of a New Year's resolution any day of our lives that we choose to turn ourselves over to the Lord and allow Him to make something more of us than we can make from our own efforts. I am truly humbled that just at the moment when it seems my energy to do and become as a human being/member of an eternal family/daughter of God is zapped and I want to settle for mediocrity, the Hand of God slips in, parts the veils guarding eternity, reminds me of what I truly desire, and then generously gives me the energy to pursue.
Disappointed in the person in the mirror, the look in your eyes?

Don't have to be.

Christmas with the Harts

and Heiners.

We had a safe drive down, no inclement weather.

Well, I've still only got a few pics from my camera. Here ya are anyhow. Who knows when I'll get the rest. Don't stay tuned-- it could be awhile. :)

We visited the World's Largest Toy Museum in Branson, Missouri. Could have been great if there were more displays the kids could touch. Eric and I had fun walking down memory lane-- but the kids were tired and bored. Poor Gwen just wanted to get out and crawl around-- but there wasn't a place to do it.
She did enjoy these ginormous pink balls...
There's my dad and my nephew, Asher, in the background. He loved the trains.
We also had a blast opening more presents, swimming in the hotel pool, eating tons of delicious food, watching lots of great movies (including Julie&Julia), visiting Silver Dollar City, playing with cousins, bathing with cousins, tormenting cousins, following cousins, idolizing cousins, (those were all Gwen, btw), man-party football, and shopping!!!

The drive home was so perfect we did the entire 12 hours in one go and pulled in at 1 am ahead of a snowstorm that dusted everything in the morning.

My Hubby is a Sweetie, if I may Brag for a Moment

2nd blog post in one week for bragging on my dear Eric. I guess you could say I'm very proud of my husband. I'm also very grateful for him. I know the Lord answers my prayers... and usually, it is through Eric.
This time I'm bragging because he planned and carried out a romantic dinner for our date night this past Saturday. Not an anniversary, not a holiday, not a birthday... just because. He kept all the ingredient shopping a surprise, secretively kept me out of the kitchen while he chopped and chopped and chopped, presented an appetizer of bruschetta while Gwen was still awake (since I was getting really hungry), and then sat me down to a candle-lit dinner after she was in bed.
On the menu: romaine, orange and olive salad with a special homemade orange vinaigrette. Then a bed of shiitake, oyster, and portabella mushrooms sauteed in olive oil and apple cider plus some thin sliced, browned, and then baked potatoes topped with Italian seasoned shrimp. The special sauce drizzled on top was a carmelized stock of vegetables and shrimp. To drink: pear sparkling cider. Everything was perfectly delicious!
Then we snuggled down for a chick flick with the Christmas tree twinkling in the background. It was a wonderful night! I felt so pampered and really appreciate how Eric sacrifices to make me feel special. He is AMAZING!!!!

Eric's Studly Herb Light Project

My hubby is AMAZING!!! In addition to his duties on his rotations AND studying AND playing with Gwen AND getting the oil changed...He rigged up this special light for my herbs! They were really struggling with only 2 hours of sunlight in the morning (you can see from the pic just how much they are struggling!). But this is the ONLY window sill in our house, really, that we could put these plants for the winter. I bemoaned the loss of some plants to my dear hubby... and this is what he did:

He used a cord from an old broken vacuum,
spliced it to connect to the light,
then attached a timer so that it goes on and off automatically.
Then he rigged up this lovely pulley system so we can raise and/or lower the light as needed.
Plus it was a lot easier to hang and
we didn't need heavy duty holes that we'd have to patch up later!
Now our bedroom is brighter than any other room in the house!
Okay, you can all agree with me:

ERIC IS A STUD!!!! :)

Wait, What?? She's 1?!?!?!

Can I believe she is truly an entire year old? No way. Where did the time go? Seriously? Is this what people mean when they say the years will fly by?
Can I believe that my daughter is no longer a baby? Well, she tries hard to convince me. She is one independent lil gal. That "I can do it myself, mom" streak runs big and bold right down the middle of every decision she makes! I present to you as evidence:
  • once she learned how to tip her bottle back to drink, she no longer lets me offer her milk, water, or juice. She will cry immediately until I put the bottle on the floor. Then she will practically dive to pick it up and drink.
  • She won't let me feed her anything either, but will only eat what she can pick up herself (I am pretty stubborn about feeding soup to her). And if she only wants to eat avocado, don't even think about trying to coax a little tortilla, corn, cheese, or whatever else into her mouth. She'll turn her head every which way to avoid you and cry like you really hurt her feelings.
  • If she is reading a book and I try to help her turn pages, she will tolerate it briefly, then will either push my hand away, turn sideways and push her body against mine to "box me out", pull the book away repeatedly, or lose interest completely and crawl away.
Only what she wants, only when she wants it, and only if she can get it herself.
We've got our very own lil independent woman. :) (oh man, just wait til the teenage years!)

Here's what we did to celebrate!
I wanted to try out a traditional Korean activity for celebrating a first birthday. All these objects were placed on the piano bench in front of Gwen. I held her and showed her each one, hoping to get her excited about all of her options. Then we took her across the room and let her go. Of course she bee lined it for the piano bench. The idea is that the first or second object that she grabs "foretells" her future. Not that I actually think it does, but sounds fun, right? So her options were:

The traditional ones:
  • bow&arrow (we used a box of ammo): the child will become a warrior or have a military career
  • needle and thread (we used yarn): the child will have a long life
  • jujube (fruit known as the Chinese date, so we used chopped dates): child will have many descendants
  • book, pencil, brush (we used a book): the child will be a successful scholar
  • ruler, needle, scissors (used bag of sewing accessories): child will be talented with her hands
  • knife (we substituted measuring cups and a bowl): the child will be a good cook
  • money or rice (we used money): the child will be wealthy
  • cakes or other foods (some raisins and goldfish crackers): the child will be a government official

and the Modern ones of our own invention we added for fun:
  • mini soccer ball: she'll be an athlete
  • piano: she'll be a musician
  • plant: she'll be an outdoorsy gal
  • computer mouse: she'll be technology-savvy
(We didn't add scriptures or any other religious things because we certainly hope that she will be strong in faith and testimony regardless of other passions she may choose in her life. Same goes for babies and motherhood.)

So do you want to know what she chose?....

wait for it...

drum roll...

oh, the anticipation is mounting....

she went straight for the soccer ball, next grabbed the measuring cups... and as an afterthought grabbed at the ammo box. Eric says that counts, even though it was 3rd. Apparently she will be warrior enough to fetch her own food for use with her culinary expertise and then work off the results with some athleticism! whew, what a gal!

We also had a delightful monkey cake (I was so excited to see if she would think it was just like a stuffed animal since I used some of my birthday money to purchase this mini stand up pan for this very occasion) which she very fastidiously smeared at first and then eventually got around to eating some.
and opened so many presents! She loved it! (I, seriously, no joke, was getting quite anxious to open these myself! I was just so excited to see what she was going to get!) I thought she might be more interested in playing with the wrapping paper. She was so funny pulling it off in strips and then trying to get it off her fingertips! I loved the way she wouldn't even look at it as she 'flicked' it away-- already focused on her next move. Sort of with this "talk to the hand" attitude flair that only teenage girls and toddlers pull off so convincingly. (oh, funny side note: she wanted to hold her own cards. Kept taking them from us when we tried to read her the messages on them.)
From Uncle Justin and Aunt Amber: thanks for the thoughtful card!
From Grandma and Grandpa Allan: thanks for the adorable lady bug outfit, the much-needed warm pjs, and the fun books!
From Grandma and Grandpa Hart: thanks for the "smart" caterpillar, the fun dinnerware set, the camo dress, and the lovely black-white-pink dress!
From Mommy and Daddy: thanks for the stacking cups for making bath time fun
(boy our present is kinda lame compared to what everyone else gave her! :)

Happy Birthday, my darling little Gwen! I can't even express how much love and joy you have brought into my life. You are such a huge blessing from our Heavenly Father. I'm so grateful that you are ours for all eternity!
