Salsa from our Garden!!!!

Eric thinks I'm a salsa snob. I think he might be right. I love a good homemade fresh salsa... I think perhaps I'm spoiled because even homemade CANNED salsa doesn't quite have the same appeal to me. Nothing beats a fresh salsa! Any kind is good: green roasted tomatillo, tomato and cilantro, yellow tomato with lime juice, mango or pineapple... I love it if it is FRESH! Well, the kind I usually make is a family recipe from Guatemala (for those of you who aren't aware, I'm 1/4 Guatemalan). Very basic, nothing too challenging-- like roasting the peppers or tomatillos-- and no exotic/expensive ingredients like mango to complicate things. It is also easily made less spicy, perfect for those of us who can't handle the fire right now--I'm not turning into a tastebud wuss, I promise, I'm just pregnant! I don't want heartburn. Just delicious salsa goodness!

Well, this year I'm pleased to announce that our lil 7 foot by 7 foot garden has yielded more than enough roma tomatos, various peppers, and large onions to create a huge batch of homemade fresh salsa with garden produce!!!! :) YAY!!! Only the cilantro, garlic, and cumin (well, and salt, sugar, lemon juice, and red pepper flakes) isn't from our own hard work. Okay, so that means only 3 ingredients are from our garden rather than the grocery store, but hey, they're the MAIN three, right? :)

The jars sure look nice all lined up and pretty, ready for sharing with neighbors and friends. Hurray for a bountiful harvest! :) I'm looking forward to eating a big chipful already! And probably putting fresh salsa on things it doesn't really belong on... just cuz it is THAT good! :) What food or product are you sort of "snobbish" or "spoiled" about? (I had a roommate who was a self-proclaimed toilet paper snob. Keeps things interesting...)

  2. It's not that you're a salsa snob, hon, it's that you have CAST IRON taste buds that can take just about anything peppers can dish out! :)

  4. Our tomatoes are the only thing I didn't completely kill when I stopped watering this year. Hardy critters, I guess. They're pretty tasty, for tomatoes.

I'm a snob about Smarties. Yeah, the little, hard pieces of sweetened chalk (hey, they're better than conversation hearts!). I can tell when they're fresh and when they're not; I can tell the difference between the colors by taste.... Smarties are a favorite. I consider myself a good mom for always letting Hayden have the free Smarties we get at Maceys.

And ditto on posting the recipe!

  6. I am a Parmesan snob. No green Kraft can for this girl. Must be fresh! Anyway-I grew garlic for the first time this year. (Being Italian and all really calls for A LOT of garlic in our family dishes) Turns our garlic grows pretty well in Ohio. Hey maybe we could trade garlic for salsa??

  7. Hey Elisa, I do not think I've ever responded before but I do read your blog so might as well... I am from your guys' freshman ward (lived next door to Sherri with Rachel J). Anyhow, I feel like commenting. First of all I am kind of a salsa snob, but not quite so much as you. I just HATE to go to a restaurant with bad salsa (most restaurants). If there is one with good salsa, I will go there just for the salsa and I try to cram as much on a chip and on all my other food as humanly possible. But, I am really a cake and frosting snob. My mom has made cakes professionally for many years and oh I am so picky about it! I do not even really go for her traditional buttercream frosting anymore. I've out snobbed her cake snobiness. If a new cupcake store opens (I love the new trend!) I have to go and judge them and let everyone know, as if they care like I do, how good (or bad)this random place's cupcakes and frosting is.

  8. Wow. I actually don't really like salsa. Probably because I don't like spicy foods and I don't like tomatoes, but yours looks so pretty I want to try it. Good job with the garden!
I am an ice snob. I like the crushed pellet ice. I buy it at Sonic. I have found myself not even bothering with ice unless it is that kind. I am also kind of a chocolate snob. I really will eat any chocolate, but I prefer Dove. Anyway, thanks for sharing the recipe. Perhaps I will humor my hubby and make it for him for New Years. :)
