Out of the Color Scheme Comfort Zone

Chances are that the gal for whom I made this book will not get online today since she is probably unpacking. So I can post these pictures and still surprise her tonight!

I really enjoyed this color scheme. Not a typical one for me, but the paper just screamed her name. What color schemes/patterns speak to you? Normally I like sort of Asian-esc minimalist stuff with slender curvilinear lines and variegated widths of angular stems and flowers. Geometric is also fun, like Islamic art or large, stylistic flowers. I'm definitely not normally a-- I'm not quite sure how to express it-- "loop-d-doopy-flowery-scallops" kind of gal. Have you ever been surprised to find yourself drawn to something that you thought you would never like? That's how this one was for me. I really LOVE the finished book. The way the gray makes the oranges and reds pop is fabulous! I'd keep it if I wasn't already making it with someone in mind. :) Or I guess I could be selfish... she hasn't seen this post yet... :P

I also experimented with slicing slits for the ribbon tie in the covers and like the way it turned out. Coptic binding, for those who might be interested. I'd love feedback: what kind of book would YOU want?

  1. Oh my goodness Elisa - I LOVE the finished product!! It looks great and I know the receiver will love it too!! You put so much time and energy into it - I am impressed! Since I love to scrapbook, I was actually thinking about color schemes the other day. I LOVE bright colors ... but struggle A LOT to pull them off. So I mostly settle for bold, rich colors - I think those are my comfort colors. :) Anyway ... random! ps ... thinking about scrapping wants me to do craft night again soon - would you be up for it? My house maybe Aug 5th? Are you available?

  3. mmm . . . these are some of my favorite colors. I love neutrals mixed with vivid oranges and reds and blues. Nicely done as well with the craftsmanship on this one. Good to see you haven't lost your book-making touch.

Speaking of color schemes, I'm trying to figure out how to add color to my apartment. Right now it's basically cream color and black/dark brown. It's harder for me to apply the color schemes I like to a whole room . . . or maybe it's just a heckuva lot more expensive.

  4. It's beautiful. I would love to learn more about the binding. Too bad I live so far away now.

Maybe you could do a tutorial.

I'm wild about color. Mixing the punchy colors with a neutral makes the overall feel of the project seem classy. I'm drawn to grey in particular myself. Great work!
