naked in the crib-- I need your suggestions

My sweet and wonderful 2 year old has got both Eric and me stumped. For the past 2 weeks, I've gone in to get her up in the morning and discovered her naked in her crib. Yes, she has mastered taking off her clothes and diaper. The past week, things have escalated. I've washed crib sheets and blankets 4 times in the past 3 days because she has dropped surprises. Yesterday I washed everything twice because she also got herself nakie after she woke from her nap.

I'm not really frustrated yet, per se. I am glad that a) she is interested in pee pee and poo poo since we are working on potty training sort of and b) that she is independent and wants to try to undress herself. More than anything, I'm just not sure what to do about it. Obviously, I can't continue to do extra laundry two times a day. Should I safety pin her zipper so she can't take off her pjs? What about her clothes during naptime? How do I get her to keep those on? Should I duct tape her diaper so she can't get access to the tabs? Should we go ahead and transition her to a toddler bed so that when she wakes up she can get into toys and appropriate things rather than having nothing better to do than get naked?

Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing? Any suggestions or ideas?

  1. If she's still obsessed with wearing her princess dress, maybe you can use that as a consequence (whether it be a punishment or reward). If you get her in the morning and she's naked you can tell her that that morning she won't be able to wear her princess dress because she's not showing you that she is taking care of her clothes and wearing them like she's suppose to (that way her actions and consequence are related). And then you can give her a second chance for her nap. Tell her before she goes down that if she keeps her clothes on that she can wear her princess dress in the afternoon, and so on. Anyway - just a suggestion. I'm not sure 100% if she's at the age were she'll understand 100% but you can see.

  2. Safety pin the zipper (worked for Marc and Elise) and duct tape the diaper (worked for Collin). :)

  3. Duct Tape. Yes, duct tape is wonderful and if it's too cold to be naked in her room, safety pin her in those cozy pj's. Everyone in my house went through the "naked" phase. It's so much easier if you try to prevent the messes in the first place:)She may be old enough to reward or discipline but I never wanted to clean all the messes while they figured it out:)

  4. My boys never really did this, but I have heard good things from other moms about using duct tape to prevent them taking off their diaper. I don't know if I would go for the safety pin. Kids can still figure those out and they are sharp. I think she is probably old enough for a toddler bed too. We put Weston in his toddler bed just before he turned two and he did great in it. I hope you find a good solution because I would already be annoyed at having to wash sheets that many times! :)

  5. My sister's twins would do this and occasionally fingerpaint with their dropped 'surprises'! LOL SO what she did was she went to a second hand store and got older used zipped jammies, cut the feet off of them, and put them on the girls backwards for bed time (so the zippers in the back). The girls couldn't reach the zipper to unzip them because they were in the back! she only had to do this for a month or so. After that they just assumed they couldn't get their jammies off, even when she went back to the regular ones. Best of luck!! :)

  6. Oh man. That does not sound fun. I have yet to experience this and I am not looking forward to it. I've heard you can put the diaper on backwards and most kids can't get it off. You could try it.

  7. In my experience the girls always took their clothes off before they went to sleep in their beds because they knew as soon as they woke up, i came in there. So the 'playing' could be going on before she even falls asleep. we used duct tape! LOVE IT! such a life savor. also, you can put her zip up jammies on backwards so the zipper is in the back. works like a charm. it only took us doing this a couple of times before the girls figured out that they couldnt take their clothes off any more so they lost interest. Good luck!!!
