What Wakes you Up?

So, lately I've been plagued with light sleep. This is HIGHLY unusual for me, as any of you that ever lived with me will verify! I am a HEAVY sleeper and regularly oversleep an alarm unless a physical person helps me wake up. (Jordan, you remember those good times, right? :P) Funny thing is that I won't hear any mechanical sounds in my sleep, but will startle awake if someone says my name. Don't know why that is.

When Eric and I were engaged I was really busy with a full load of spring/summer classes. He had a much lighter schedule. Naturally, despite my workload, we were the usual engaged couple that stays up WAY late every night just having a great time. especially since it was summer! So, I had Eric call me every morning to wake me up for class. I thought this would give him adequate warning about my difficulty waking up. Turns out, he was still surprised when we got married. Apparently, he thought I just wanted to talk with him every morning and used the 'wake up call' as a ploy to squeeze more Eric time into my day. Boy was he surprised to discover my morning wake up troubles! But I digress. I was telling you about my recent inability to sleep.

Sometimes it is because I have to use the restroom (pregnancy does that to you). Sometimes it is because I wake up hungry (pregnancy does that to you too). And sometimes it is because our sweet 33 week baby is awake and would like to play games in my tummy (pregnancy definitely did THAT to me!). Whatever the cause, despite my exhaustion during the day, I find I've become a light sleeper in the mornings. I get up and stay up at ridiculous hours (3:15, 4:30, 5:45, 6:15 on a Saturday...) and even have trouble taking naps. I just lay there. Restful, but kind of frustrating when I'd REALLY like to be in a deep sleep dreaming or something! This morning I got up early after laying there for over an hour and made omelettes with fresh tomatoes and peppers from our garden, sauted mushrooms, salami, and raspberry-peach yogurt/OJ smoothies for our breakfast. At least I did something productive, right? :)

So, what wakes you up in the middle of the night? What wakes you up in the morning, and would you prefer to wake up some other way? Let's hear some stories, eh?

  1. What wakes me up in the morning:

    Um, Rebecca?

On the plus side, she doesn't cry. On the minus side, she squirms and grunts and grunts and kicks (believe it or not, this is actually even more annoying when they're on the outside).

I'll be so glad when her room is finished and she can sleep in NOT MY BED.

  3. I am the same way! I used to tell Josh all of the time that I am WAY hard of a sleeper. He too did not believe me. He sure does now! I do have good news. The sleep does come back!!! Now it takes a couple of months after the baby starts sleeping through the night, but Josh hears the girls way before I do now. I wake (sort of) when he is crawling back into bed. WHOOPS!

As a side note, I thought I would pass on a little bit of "mom knowledge". I always double sheet the babys bed. I do a waterproof mattress pad, sheet, waterproof mattress pad and then another sheet. Changing the sheets on cribs is one of those things you will come to almost loose your religion over. SO save yourself the trouble and when they leak through or throw up in the middle of the night, all you have to do is take off the first sheet and mattress pad and you are good to go!!!! I can't wait to see your little one!!! Congrats again!

  4. The joys of pregnancy! My little one is waking me up every morning at 5:00am for a bathroom break. With Hultz, it was bathroom needs & leg cramps. Have you had crazy pregnant dreams? Those would wake me up too. Just a few more weeks!

  5. I hear you! I NEVER woke up to pee in the night until I was pregnant. It hasn't ever really gone away. After I had Weston I still had a really hard time sleeping. This time I am much better. For some reason I sleep tons better now that Davin is a sleeper too. I think most of it is just pregnancy. I usually only wake up now when I hear one of the kids. Also if I get to hot I will wake up and have to put the fan in the window or kick off the covers.

I dont use an alarm everyday anymore, but when I do I wake up as soon as it starts making noise. Sometimes I even wake up to the click of the alarm turning on, before it has even beeped.

I don't take naps in the day anymore because I can't fall asleep if i do. Anyway, sleep is amazing and believe it or not you will sleep for 8 hours straight again someday. :)

  6. Welcome to the last trimester of pregnancy. Blah.
I now wake up to a little boy babbling to hiimself and end up getting up because I feel guilty making him play in his crib so long in the morning. But the sleepless prego nights are rough. Hang in there.
